The University of Würzburg has made major efforts to establish interdisciplinary teaching programs in the biomedical sciences. An excellent and long-standing cooperation of the faculties of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Medicine, and the establishment of inter-faculty institutions like the Biocenter and the Rudolf Virchow Center for Experimental Medicine have helped to create a favorable environment for interdisciplinary education and training. The Study Program is designed to prepare its graduates for flexible careers in the biomedical sciences and to foster interdisciplinary approaches. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with methodological expertise, teamwork skills and personal development in the setting of academic research.
With the establishment of the International Graduate School for Life Science (GSLS) in the framework of the excellence initiative of the DFG, formal requirements for the study program are governed by GSLS.
This program has proven to be very effective in training students and fostering communication, collaboration and early independence. It offers a mix of mandatory elements for all members together with more specific components tailored to the knowledge and needs of each student. The latter part is decided upon in consultations between the student and the supervising committee according to the current format.
The language of modern biomedical science is English and all communication within the RTK, whether messaging, seminars or annual reports, will only be in English.
The study program will have the following components:
